First model of Beretta was adopted by United States Armed Forces in 1985 as Beretta 92F, after receiving military specifications. This gun is direct successor of the popular sidearm the M1911A1. In the early 1970s almost every section of the U.S. Armed Forces except the U.S. Air Force was assigned the .45 ACP M1911 pistol. Others opted for the .38 Special as a more convinent sidearm for their specific duties. But M1911 stayed very popular choice in many military branches.
